How do I manage discovery services?

Follow

Once the Auvik collector is successfully installed on a network, it automatically scans its local subnet to find more networks and devices. By adjusting the discovery settings, you can control how frequently the scan is completed, specific OIDs that should be monitored, and which services should be used to access data.

Changing the discovery settings from your MSP dashboard applies the settings to all your clients. To change a setting for a specific client, you must change the setting from that client’s dashboard. Note: Settings changed from the client’s dashboard are not overwritten by any settings changed from your MSP dashboard.

How to enable a service

Enabling a service from your MSP dashboard enables the service for all your clients. To enable the service for a specific client, enable the service from that client’s dashboard.

If you previously disabled the service for a specific client, it remains disabled until you re-enable it from that client’s dashboard.

  1. Click Discovery in the side navigation bar
  2. Click Service Settings
  3. Click the appropriate service to enable: SNMP, SSH, Telnet, CLI, WMI, or VMware
  4. From the Enabled drop-down menu, select Yes, use this service to gather data
  5. Click Save

How to specify custom ports

Auvik uses specific ports for its services. If there are other ports enabled on your network devices, you can specify custom ports for Auvik to use rather than the defaults.

These are the default ports used by Auvik:

Service

Port

SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol)

161

SSH

22

Telnet

23

WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation)

5985

VMware

443

Setting specific ports from your MSP dashboard sets the ports for all your clients. To set ports for a specific client, set the ports from that client’s dashboard.

  1. Click Discovery in the side navigation bar
  2. Click the Discovery Settings tab
  3. Click Service Settings
  4. Click the service you want to specify a port for: SNMP, SSH, Telnet, WMI, or VMware
  5. From the Use Default Ports drop-down menu, select No - Custom Ports
    • To specify multiple ports for a service, click the + sign to add the next port
  6. Click Save

How to edit a service

Editing a discovery service is limited to specifying which devices (or interfaces) the service will be tried against to access data about the device, and whether the service should use the default port or a custom port.

Editing a discovery service from your MSP dashboard edits the service for all your clients. To edit a service for a specific client, make the edits from that client’s dashboard.

From your MSP dashboard, specifying an entity for a service is limited to device type. To add additional properties (such as vendor), you must edit the service from the client’s dashboard.

  1. Click Discovery in the side navigation bar
  2. Click the Discovery Settings tab
  3. Click Service Settings
  4. Click the appropriate service to edit: SNMP, SSH, Telnet, CLI, WMI, or VMware
  5. Make any edits you want
    • If the service is set up to use a custom port and you want to specify multiple ports, click the + sign to add the next port
    • When adding an entity for the service, you can filter devices
  6. Click Save

How to reset a service

To know which health checks have been updated, look at the reset button or asterisk for the service located at the top right, next to the header. A disabled reset button and white asterisk (ZendeskKB_88.png) indicate no updates have been made. An enabled reset button and grey asterisk (ZendeskKB_89.png) indicate an update has been made.

NOTE: Resets don’t include removing custom ports that have been added. To remove a custom port, you must click the trash can next to the port, then click Save.

  1. Click Discovery in the side navigation bar
  2. Click the Discovery Settings tab
  3. Click Service Settings
  4. Click the appropriate service to edit: SNMP, SSH, Telnet, CLI, WMI, or VMware
  5. Click the Reset button
  6. Confirm the reset by clicking Reset
