How do I manage custom SNMP Pollers?

Follow

If you need to collect information from a specific SNMP OID that Auvik does not gather by default, you can create a custom SNMP Poller.

Custom SNMP Pollers can collect vendor-specific information such as temperature, hardware status, or serial numbers. You can also create alerts based on the values returned by a poller.

Custom SNMP Pollers supplement monitoring data. They do not enable CLI configuration backups or replace the credentials required for configuration backups.

You need the appropriate permissions to create, edit, assign, or delete SNMP Pollers.

Managing SNMP Poller settings from a multi-site dashboard applies the settings to all applicable child sites. To manage a poller for a specific site, change the setting from that site’s dashboard.

SNMP Poller settings changed from a child site are not overwritten by settings changed from the multi-site dashboard.

Unit of measurement

When creating or editing a numeric SNMP Poller, you can select a unit of measurement from the available options or enter a custom unit.

This allows you to collect and display values such as temperature or other numeric device measurements using the appropriate unit.

How to create an SNMP Poller

  1. Click Discovery in the side navigation bar.
  2. Click the Discovery Settings tab.
  3. Click SNMP Poller Settings.
  4. Click Add SNMP Poller Setting.
  5. Complete the Add SNMP Poller Setting form:
    • OID: Enter the SNMP OID that you want Auvik to query.
    • Expected Type: Select String or Numeric.
    • Poll Period: Select how often Auvik should query the device for this poller.
    • Devices: Select the devices to which the poller applies. Be as specific as possible so that only devices supporting the OID are queried.
    • Output Parser: Optionally select a parser to modify the returned value. Available options may include After, Before, Between, and Regular Expression.
    • Test Device: Select a device against which to test the OID.
    • Name: Enter the display name for the SNMP Poller.
    • Type: Select String or Numeric.
    • Use As: For string values, select whether the value is used as an SNMP Poller value or as a serial number.
    • Units: For numeric values, select the appropriate unit of measurement or enter a custom unit.
  6. Use Test Device to validate the returned value and any configured parsing.
  7. Click Save.

Before creating the poller, identify the exact OID and confirm the expected data type, unit, and scaling. Obtain the vendor MIB when available.

You can test the OID outside Auvik using the same SNMP version and credentials configured in Auvik. For example:

snmpget -v2c -c <community> <device_ip> <oid>

For SNMPv3, use the equivalent command with the configured username, authentication, privacy, and security settings.

A maximum of 1,250 monitors is supported per device.

Validate SNMP Poller results

After the next polling cycle:

  1. Open the device in Auvik.
  2. Open the device’s SNMP Pollers or metric details.
  3. Confirm that the value is being collected.
  4. Confirm that the returned value, unit, and scaling are correct.

Custom SNMP Poller values do not populate Auvik’s standard CPU or memory dashboard widgets unless Auvik natively maps the OID to those widgets.

View custom poller results in the device’s SNMP Pollers section or in supported custom dashboards and charts.

Create an alert for an SNMP Poller

If you want to receive alerts for the value returned by an SNMP Poller:

  1. Create and save the SNMP Poller.
  2. Navigate to Manage Alerts > Alerts.
  3. Select Create New Alert.
  4. Search for the name of the SNMP Poller.
  5. Select the SNMP Poller.
  6. Click Next Step.
  7. Configure the alert conditions, scope, severity, and notification settings.
  8. Save and enable the alert.

How to edit SNMP Poller settings

Screenshot 2024-05-07 at 2.19.20 PM.png
  1. Click Discovery in the side navigation bar.
  2. Click the Discovery Settings tab.
  3. Click SNMP Poller Settings.
  4. Find the poller that you want to edit.
  5. Select the checkbox at the beginning of its row.
  6. Click Edit.
  7. Make the required changes.
  8. Click Save.

How to reset SNMP Poller settings

Only SNMP Poller settings created from the multi-site dashboard can be reset. You cannot reset SNMP Poller settings created directly on a child site from the multi-site dashboard.

An asterisk identifies pollers that have been updated:

  • A white asterisk indicates that no child-site update has been made.
  • A grey asterisk indicates that an update has been made.
  1. Click Discovery in the side navigation bar.
  2. Click the Discovery Settings tab.
  3. Click SNMP Poller Settings.
  4. Find the poller that you want to reset.
  5. Confirm that the asterisk is grey.
  6. Select the checkbox at the beginning of the row.
  7. Click Reset.
  8. Confirm the reset by clicking Reset.

How to delete SNMP Poller settings

  1. Click Discovery in the side navigation bar.
  2. Click the Discovery Settings tab.
  3. Click SNMP Poller Settings.
  4. Find the poller that you want to delete.
  5. Select the checkbox at the beginning of the row.
  6. Click Delete.
  7. Confirm the deletion by clicking Delete.

When you delete an SNMP Poller, any alerts associated with that poller are automatically disabled. If you recreate the poller later, edit the disabled alert to redefine its trigger conditions and enable it again.

How to restore deleted SNMP Poller settings

Only SNMP Poller settings shared between the multi-site dashboard and child sites can be restored. SNMP Poller settings created directly on a specific site cannot be restored from the parent level.

  1. Click Discovery in the side navigation bar.
  2. Click the Discovery Settings tab.
  3. Click SNMP Poller Settings.
  4. Hover over the options or gear icon above the Add SNMP Poller Setting button.
  5. Click Restore SNMP Poller Settings.
  6. Select the deleted poller that you want to restore.
  7. Click Restore.

Troubleshooting

If the SNMP Poller does not return the expected value:

  • Confirm that the OID is correct for the device model and firmware.
  • Confirm that the SNMP credentials assigned to the device are valid.
  • Confirm that the OID is included in the device’s SNMP view.
  • Confirm that the selected data type matches the returned value.
  • Check the configured unit and scaling.
  • Test the OID outside Auvik using the same SNMP version and credentials.
  • Confirm that the device is reachable from the assigned Collector.
  • Check whether the device is rate-limiting SNMP requests.
  • Review the vendor MIB and device documentation for the correct OID and table index.

If the issue persists, provide Support with:

  • The OID and vendor MIB, if available
  • Device make, model, and firmware version
  • SNMP version
  • Sanitized snmpget or snmpwalk output
  • Expected value, data type, and unit
  • SNMP Poller configuration
  • The test device and approximate test time

Do not include SNMP communities, passwords, API keys, or other credentials.
