Billable Servers and Billable Workstations

Billable Servers are server and hypervisor devices within the Auvik Network Management product, on which an Auvik Endpoint Agent has been deployed. Hypervisors are considered servers.

Billable Workstations are devices within the Auvik Network Management product, on which an Auvik Endpoint Agent has been deployed.

Server monitoring and endpoint monitoring are add-ons to Auvik Network Management.

A server or hypervisor (referred to as server below) will be classified as billable for Server Monitoring if it meets all of the following:

  1. Auvik identifies the type of the device as a server or as a hypervisor
  2. The Auvik Endpoint Agent is installed on the server
  3. The Auvik Endpoint Agent on the server connects to the Auvik Cloud at least once during the day
  4. Server monitoring is enabled during that day

A workstation will be classified as billable for Endpoint Monitoring if it meets all of the following:

  1. Auvik identifies the type of the device as a workstation
  2. The Auvik Endpoint Agent is installed on the workstation
  3. The Auvik Endpoint Agent on the workstation connects to the Auvik Cloud at least once during the day
  4. Endpoint monitoring is enabled during that day

A server, hypervisor, or workstation with an Auvik Endpoint Agent that connects to the Auvik cloud at any time during the day will be marked as billable for that day.

The quantity of billable servers or billable workstations is determined by the high-water mark of online servers or workstations through the month.

Details on Billable Servers and Billable Workstations:

  • Servers and workstations are counted independently to determine billable asset counts of each type. Hypervisors are counted as servers.
  • If a server is not required for monitoring, do not install the Auvik Endpoint Agent on the server OR uninstall the agent if it has already been installed.
  • If a workstation is not required for monitoring, do not install the Auvik Endpoint Agent on the workstation OR uninstall the agent if it has already been installed.
  • If you do not require server monitoring or endpoint monitoring, disable server and/or endpoint monitoring. Note that disabling server monitoring does not cancel any contracts in place. For more details on how to cancel a subscription, see How do I cancel my paid subscription.
  • Promotional pricing for server monitoring or endpoint monitoring may be available. Auvik may, in its sole discretion, apply eligibility criteria and usage limits to this promotion, such as minimum billable devices or requiring an approved collector at all sites.

Essential details on billable assets

The following statements apply to all device based billable assets and packages discussed on this page:

  • Auvik determines a billable device class. An administrator can change a device's classification in the UI, but this does not change its billable status.
  • If the device is not required for monitoring, the administrator can change the managed state in the device setup section to unmanaged. Note: Unmanaged devices are excluded from any alert notifications.
  • Administrators are welcome to change the device classification; however, user modifications will not change the billable status.
  • If administrators have questions about device identification and classification, please email support@auvik.com.
  • Switches identified as members of a stack still count as individual billable assets. Stackable switch support is optional and can be disabled if an organization prefers stacks to be monitored as a single unit. Note that this may limit switch stack visibility and alerting.
  • For all Auvik plans that include an Overage billing, the overage is calculated monthly and invoiced monthly, quarterly, or annually in accordance with your order form.
    • For any Auvik plan that does not include Overage billing, usage is subject to the number of purchased subscriptions set out in your order form. If you exceed such limits, you may purchase additional device subscriptions, as appropriate, or you may reduce your usage to bring it within the subscribed limits.
  • All Auvik contracts have a minimum contracted spend. Removing all devices does not cancel the contract or avoid an invoice.
  • Subscriptions are not cancellable during the term except under the limited circumstances set out in the subscription services agreement. To cancel a contract subscription, please review How do I cancel my paid subscription.

Note: Auvik is the arbiter of whether a device meets the billable asset criteria.

Auvik SaaS Management

Auvik SaaS Management (ASM) is designed to help you discover, monitor, and manage your organization’s SaaS applications. Unlike the rest of Auvik’s IT management platform, ASM uses a per-user pricing model rather than per-device billing.

A user will be classified as a Billable User if it meets all of the following:

  1. The user has been discovered by Auvik SaaS Management through the installation of an endpoint discovery agent, through an integration into a supported identity provider, or through other supported means.
  2. There is activity attributed to the user identified by Auvik SaaS Management during the previous 30 days.
  3. The user is not marked as a disabled user or expired user in Auvik SaaS Management.
  4. Users are marked as expired automatically after 30 days have passed since their last activity.

The quantity of billable users is determined by a count of unique users through the month.

Additional details on billable users:

  • If a user is not required for monitoring, the administrator can change the managed state of the user by marking the user as disabled.
  • For any Auvik plan that does not include Overage billing, usage is subject to the number of purchased subscriptions set out in your order form. If you exceed such limits, you may purchase additional user subscriptions, or you may reduce your usage to bring it within the subscribed limits.
  • All Auvik contracts have a minimum contracted spend. Removing all users does not cancel the contract or avoid an invoice.
  • Subscriptions are not cancellable during the term except under the limited circumstances set out in the subscription services agreement. To cancel a contract subscription, please review How do I cancel my paid subscription

Example Usage Calculations

Understanding Average Usage: An example calculation of usage for assets with a monthly average

For assets that leverage an average of the daily usage, the quantity of billable assets for a given month is determined by a monthly average of daily online devices for that type.

Example:

  • On days 1-19 of the month, 5 billable assets are used
  • On days 20-31 of the month, 6 billable assets are used
  • The average for the month is 5.39 assets, rounded to the nearest integer for a total of 5 billable assets that month.

Understanding High Water Mark Usage: An example calculation of usage for assets with a high water mark

For assets that leverage the high water mark billing model, the quantity of billable assets is determined by the highest quantity of daily online assets, for that specific asset type, through the month.

Example:

  • On Days 1-10 of the month, 6 assets are connected each day
  • On Day 11, 2 additional assets of the same type come online, making it a total of 8 assets of the same type connected that day
  • On Day 12, 4 assets are taken offline, making a total of 4 assets of that type connected that day
    • On Days 13-31, 4 assets of that type remain connected
  • “8” is the high-water mark for the month, so 8 devices of that asset type will be billed for the month. (Actual billing may differ for customers who have a minimum contracted number of billable assets).

Understanding Unique User Usage: An example calculation of usage with a unique count of users

Auvik SaaS Management leverages the count of unique users billing model. The quantity of billable users is determined by a sum of the users identified as a unique user through the month.

Example:

  • On Day 25 in a prior month, 10 users are identified. There is then no further usage attributed to any of those 10 users after that day. They remain active users as usage has been attributed to them. These are represented by the blue bars in the attached chart.
  • On Day 5 of the month, 100 new users are identified, bringing the total to 110. These are represented by the red bars in the attached chart.
  • On day 26 of the month, the 10 users with no usage are marked as expired and no longer billable, dropping the total online users to 100, but the total unique users (Green line) remains at 110.
  • On Day 28, 50 new users are identified, bringing the total online users to 150, and the total unique users identified to 160. These are represented as the yellow bars in the attached chart.
  • 160 is the billable asset quantity for the month (Green line), as 160 total unique users, 10 + 100 + 50, were identified through the month.
  • Note that actual billing may differ for customers who have a minimum contracted number of billable users.
