Getting started with Auvik's Microsoft Power BI reporting templates

Follow

Auvik’s global and site level dashboards are designed to provide real-time operational views into your networks. For management reporting or trend analysis, we recommend using a data visualization tool like Microsoft Power BI.

To help you get started with Power BI, we’ve designed and built a set of ready-to-use reporting templates. These templates can be used as is or can be easily customized to meet your reporting needs. When you start with an Auvik template, you don’t need to configure data sources and set up the data model in Power BI.

We’ve designed four templates for different reporting scenarios:

Choosing the Right Power BI Template

Power BI Templates 2.0 now come in two versions:

  1. Auvik Power BI Template 2.0 (Full)
    • Includes all reports and metrics.
    • Best for in-depth reporting with full device performance data.
  2. Auvik Power BI Template 2.0 Performance
    • Optimized for faster load times.
    • Excludes device performance metrics but includes availability data.

Which one should you use? Use this simple guide:

  • Choose the Full Template if:
    • You need performance metrics (CPU, bandwidth, memory, etc.).
    • You are reporting on smaller tenants.
    • Your reports cover short to medium time ranges.
  • Choose the Performance Template if:
    • You’re reporting on large tenants.
    • You need to speed up load times.
    • Your reporting period spans several months or more.
    • You don't need detailed device performance metrics.

Both templates are available from Auvik’s GitHub repository.

If those templates don't fit exactly what you need, you can customize them.

QBRs (Quarterly Business Reviews)

Auvik’s QBR report template is a management report that highlights the business side of network management. This template provides a roll up of the network uptime, network device inventory and alerts to help communicate what’s being managed. The template also shows potential candidates for infrastructure upgrades based on correlating different at-risk metrics.

Device Performance Assessments

(Available in Full template only) Auvik’s device performance management report template focuses on device-level performance metrics over a period of time. This report can be used to correlate known network issues with the key stats of a device including bandwidth, CPU, memory, storage, bandwidth and packet loss. It’s useful for identifying trends, troubleshooting, and correlating performance issues.

Inventory Management

Auvik’s inventory management report template shows inventory rollups by device vendor, type, and model. It provides comparisons between key metrics to support capacity planning, lifecycle management, and procurement decisions.

NOC Service Reporting

Auvik’s NOC service report template provides a summary of alerts over a period of time to identify problem sites or devices. The Alerts Description section shows pending alerts by default, but can be modified to show resolved alerts instead.

How to customize an Auvik Power BI template

A perk of using  Power BI is that you can use the templates as a starting point and customize them further. In Power BI, click  Fields to see a list of possible fields that are available. The fields can be dragged and dropped into existing charts, KPIs, and tables. They can also be used to create new visualizations in Power BI.

How to Get Started

  1. Download the Template
  2. Set Up Your Auvik User for Power BI
  3. Open in Power BI Desktop
    • Use Microsoft Power BI Desktop or Power BI Pro/Enterprise to open the template.
  4. Customize as Needed
    • Use the Fields pane in Power BI to drag and drop new fields into charts, tables, or KPIs.
    • Add your own visuals or adjust filters for more tailored insights.
