If you want to receive Internet Connection Check alerts sooner, review the associated Alerts v2 definition and adjust its alert timing. Shorter delays can improve response time, but may also increase notifications caused by brief connectivity interruptions.
What to review first
Confirm that:
- The correct Internet Connection Check is being monitored.
- The check is active and reporting current results.
- The monitored public IP address or interface is correct.
- The firewall allows ICMP from Auvik’s cloud ping infrastructure.
Auvik’s Internet Connection Check sends three ICMP pings during each interval. If any one of those pings receives a reply, the address is considered available for that interval.

Reduce the Alert Delay
Alerts v2 can delay a notification until the alert condition remains true for a specified period.
- Go to Manage Alerts.
- Open the Alerts v2 definition associated with the Internet Connection Check.
- Review the trigger condition and Alert Delay.
- Reduce the Alert Delay or remove it if faster notification is required.
- Save the alert.
A shorter or zero-second delay may provide faster notification, but it can also create alerts for brief Internet or ICMP interruptions.

Create a dedicated alert for a critical connection
If only one Internet Connection Check requires faster notification, create a separate Alerts v2 definition for that check instead of changing the alert used by other sites or connections.
- Create or clone an Alerts v2 service alert.
- Select only the required Internet Connection Check.
- Configure the desired trigger condition and Alert Delay.
- Select the appropriate notification channel.
- Save and enable the alert.
This allows critical connections to use a shorter delay while other Internet Connection Checks continue using a more conservative configuration.
Recommended approach
Use different alert definitions when connections have different response requirements.
For example:
- Critical connection: short or no Alert Delay.
- Standard connection: longer Alert Delay to reduce notifications from brief interruptions.
The Internet Connection Check’s underlying polling behavior may not be configurable for every service type. If the check interval or failure threshold is not available in the service settings, use the Alerts v2 Alert Delay to control notification timing.
Test the change
Test during a planned maintenance window or with a non-production connection whenever possible.
- Confirm that the Internet Connection Check is reporting successfully.
- Trigger or observe a controlled interruption.
- Verify that the alert is generated within the expected time.
- Confirm that the notification is delivered to the expected channel.
- Restore the connection.
- Confirm that the alert clears according to its clear condition.
Do not intentionally interrupt a production connection without an approved maintenance plan.
