How to Alert on Packet Loss on Cloud Ping Checks

Follow

Auvik Network Management lets you monitor pings to a public IP address (for example, the Internet connection for your network). These are known as cloud ping checks. See How do I start, stop, add, edit, or delete monitoring for services? on how to set up a cloud ping check.

Auvik will automatically detect internet connections and set up a cloud ping check. See How do I manage Internet connections? for details.

Here’s how to create an alert (using Alerts 2.0) to monitor packet loss on the cloud ping check.

Steps to Create the Alert

  1. Go to the global, multi-site or site that the cloud ping check(s) belong to.
    • If the alert is only for a single cloud ping check, the alert can be created at the site level and the cloud ping check name can be selected from a dropdown.
    • If the alert is designed to monitor multiple cloud ping checks, the alert can be created at the global site or at the parent multi-site of all the cloud ping checks that you want to monitor. To use this method, it is easier if a naming convention for the cloud ping checks is adopted. The advantage of this method is that a single alert is used to manage the monitoring of all the selected cloud ping checks and is easier to manage.
  2. Navigate to Manage Alerts >New Alerts.
  3. Click Add Alert.
  4. Fill in the Alert Name.
  5. Fill in the Alert Description.
  6. Set Apply Conditions dropdown to Services.
  7. Select the cloud ping checks.
    1. Click +Add Rule.
    2. Select the cloud ping checks.
      • If it is for a single cloud ping check and this is the site, select equal to and pick the cloud ping check using the dropdown.
      • Otherwise, select contains, does not contain, starts with, does not start with ends with, does not end with and enter the pattern to select the desired set of cloud ping checks.
  8. Set the Alert Severity.
  9. Define the Trigger Conditions.
    • Add a rule where Cloud Ping Packet Loss is greater than the desired threshold.
  10. Enter a Trigger message.
    • Type $ to see the list of available variables.
  11. Set the Alert delay.
    • Leverage this to avoid alerting on services that recover on their own.
  12. Add Notifications.
    • If you are adding email notification channels, set the desired Email delivery delay.
  13. Define the Clear conditions
    • Use the Custom Clear Condition.
    • Add a rule where Cloud Ping Packet Loss is less than the above threshold plus some buffer to avoid oscillating around the defined threshold and causing alerts to trigger and clear frequently.
  14. Define the Clear message.
  15. Click Complete and Save.

Refer to Creating Alerts using Alerting 2.0 to get started.
