Billing: Why devices may not be counted yet

Follow

Overview

If your devices appear online in Auvik but your billable device count remains at 0 or is lower than expected, there are several factors that determine when a device becomes billable.

This article outlines the most common reasons why a device may not yet be included in your billable device count.

Before you begin

Ensure that:

  • The device has been successfully discovered by Auvik.
  • The device appears in your inventory.
  • Sufficient time has passed since the device was first discovered.

Why a device may not be counted

Device is not identified as a billable device

Auvik automatically determines whether a device is billable based on its detected device class.

Common billable device classes include:

  • Routers
  • Switches
  • Firewalls
  • Wireless controllers

Devices that are not classified as billable, or are intentionally ignored, are not included in billing.

Note: Billable status is determined automatically by Auvik. Changing the displayed device type does not change whether the device is billable.

Device is not being actively managed

For a device to become billable, Auvik must be able to monitor it using a supported network management protocol, such as SNMP.

Verify that:

  • Valid monitoring credentials are configured.
  • The collector can reach the device.
  • The device is responding successfully to monitoring requests.

Devices that cannot be managed may appear in inventory but will not be counted as billable.

Device was recently discovered

Newly discovered devices are not counted immediately.

After Auvik successfully discovers, classifies, and begins monitoring a device, it can take up to 24 hours for the device to appear in your billable device count.

If the device was recently added or onboarding has just completed, allow additional time before verifying billing.

Site or licensing configuration

If the billable count is lower than expected, confirm that:

  • The device belongs to the correct site.
  • The site is included in your subscription.
  • Your licensing matches the devices you expect to be billed.

Troubleshooting

If devices are still not appearing as billable after 24 hours:

  1. Export your device inventory.
  2. Verify each device's detected class.
  3. Confirm monitoring credentials are valid and functioning.
  4. Check that the devices are reachable by the collector.
  5. Contact Auvik Support and provide the device inventory export for a billing review.
