How do I manage Internet connections?

Auvik displays Internet connection information on the Home Dashboard, allowing you to monitor bandwidth utilization and quickly identify the status of your WAN connections.

Auvik automatically discovers Internet connections by identifying default gateway devices and their associated interfaces. For each connection, Auvik displays aggregate bandwidth information and provides quick access to interface-level monitoring.

How Internet Connections Are Identified

In most environments, Auvik automatically detects Internet connections by identifying:

  • Default gateways
  • WAN-facing interfaces
  • Routing information collected from monitored devices

In some environments, such as complex multi-WAN deployments or networks with unusual routing configurations, Auvik may be unable to automatically determine the correct Internet connection. In those cases, you can manually configure the connection.

Add an Internet Connection

If Auvik does not automatically identify your Internet connection, you can add it manually.

  1. In the Internet Connections widget, click Add Connection.
  2. Select the appropriate device from the Device dropdown.
  3. Select the appropriate WAN-facing interface from the Interface dropdown.
  4. Click Save.

You can add additional Internet connections at any time.

This is especially useful in environments with:

  • Multiple ISPs
  • SD-WAN deployments
  • Backup Internet circuits
  • Load-balanced WAN connections

Note: Adding an Internet connection provides bandwidth monitoring for the selected interface. For end-to-end Internet availability and latency monitoring, consider configuring a Cloud Ping service for the public-facing IP address associated with the connection.

Edit an Internet Connection

To modify an existing Internet connection:

  1. Locate the connection in the Internet Connections widget.
  2. Select the connection.
  3. Click Edit.
  4. Update the device or interface.
  5. Click Save.

Changes take effect immediately.

Delete an Internet Connection

To remove an Internet connection from the widget:

  1. Locate the connection.
  2. Select the connection.
  3. Click Delete.
  4. Confirm the deletion.

Note: Deleting an Internet connection removes it from the Internet Connections widget only. The underlying device and interface continue to be monitored by Auvik.

View Aggregate Bandwidth Data

By default, the Internet Connections widget displays:

  • Interface name
  • Aggregate bandwidth utilization
  • Current bandwidth usage
  • Peak bandwidth usage
  • Lowest bandwidth usage

The displayed values reflect the currently selected time range.

View Detailed Data Points

To view additional details:

  1. Hover over a bandwidth graph.
  2. Review the tooltip.

The tooltip displays:

  • Date and time
  • Bandwidth value
  • Position within the selected reporting period

This can be useful when investigating performance issues or identifying periods of high utilization.

View an Internet Interface Dashboard

To view detailed information for a specific Internet connection:

  1. Locate the connection in the Internet Connections widget.
  2. Click the interface name.

The interface dashboard provides additional information such as:

  • Historical utilization
  • Interface statistics
  • Errors and discards
  • Performance trends

Best Practices

For the most accurate Internet monitoring:

  • Ensure WAN interfaces are monitored using SNMP.
  • Verify that default gateway devices are properly discovered.
  • Configure Cloud Ping monitoring for public-facing IP addresses.
  • Monitor both primary and backup Internet connections in multi-WAN environments.
  • Review bandwidth trends regularly to identify capacity concerns before they impact users.

Troubleshooting

If an Internet connection is not appearing automatically:

  • Verify the gateway device is managed by Auvik.
  • Confirm SNMP monitoring is functioning correctly.
  • Verify routing information is being collected.
  • Confirm the WAN interface is discovered and monitored.
  • Manually add the Internet connection if automatic detection is unsuccessful.

If bandwidth data is missing:

  • Verify interface statistics are available through SNMP.
  • Confirm the interface is operational.
  • Allow sufficient polling time for utilization data to populate.
  • Review the interface dashboard for additional diagnostic information.
