How can we help?

How do I start, stop, add, edit, or delete monitoring for services?

Follow

Auvik can monitor common network services and Internet connectivity across your environment.

Service monitoring helps verify that devices and applications are responding as expected and can alert you when a service becomes unavailable.

By default, many service monitors are disabled until they are explicitly enabled.

You can:

Types of Service Monitors

Auvik supports two types of service monitoring:

Port Check

A Port Check verifies that a specific service is responding on one or more TCP ports.

Common examples include:

  • HTTP (TCP 80)
  • HTTPS (TCP 443)
  • SSH (TCP 22)
  • RDP (TCP 3389)
  • SMTP (TCP 25)

Port Checks connect to the specified port and verify that the service responds appropriately.

Cloud Ping Check

A Cloud Ping Check monitors Internet-facing services by testing a public IP address or public FQDN.

Common examples include:

  • Public websites
  • VPN gateways
  • Public-facing firewalls
  • Internet connections

Cloud Ping Checks are commonly used to monitor WAN availability and Internet service status.

Note: Any entity selected for a Cloud Ping Check must have a public IP address or public FQDN.

Best Practices

  • Avoid creating multiple service monitors that check the same service on the same devices.
  • Use Cloud Ping Checks for Internet availability monitoring.
  • Use Port Checks for application and device service monitoring.
  • Configure alerts only for services that require operational attention.
  • Review service monitor assignments periodically to avoid duplicate notifications.

Important: For HTTP, HTTPS, and other port-based services, any additional monitored ports may also become available as connection options within Auvik Remote Browser.

Service Monitoring Scope

Service monitoring is entity-specific.

For example:

  • SSH may be monitored on routers and switches.
  • RDP may be monitored on Windows servers.
  • HTTPS may be monitored on firewalls and web applications.

Auvik only applies service checks to devices where the service is relevant.

Start Monitoring Services

To enable monitoring for one or more services:

  1. Navigate to Inventory > All Services.
  2. Select the service or services you want to monitor.
  3. Click Monitor.
  4. Confirm the action.

Auvik will begin checking the selected services according to their configured monitoring schedule.

Stop Monitoring Services

To disable monitoring:

  1. Navigate to Inventory > All Services.
  2. Select the service or services.
  3. Click Don't Monitor.
  4. Confirm the action.

Disabling monitoring stops future checks but does not delete the service configuration.

Add a Service Monitor

To create a new service monitor:

  1. Navigate to Inventory > All Services.
  2. Click Add Service.
  3. Select the monitor type:
    • Port Check
    • Cloud Ping Check

Configure a Port Check

For Port Checks, specify:

  • Service Name
  • Service Type
  • Port Number
  • Up/Down Status Attempts

To monitor multiple ports, click + and add additional ports.

Additional settings can be customized or left at their default values.

Configure a Cloud Ping Check

For Cloud Ping Checks, specify:

  • Service Name
  • Public IP Address or Public FQDN
  • Target Entity (optional)
  • Up/Down Status Attempts

Additional settings can be customized as required.

Configure Service Alerts

To receive notifications when a service becomes unavailable:

  1. Enable Notify me when this service goes down.
  2. Review the automatically created alert.
  3. Optionally customize:
    • Alert severity
    • Notification frequency
    • Notification channel

If a notification channel does not already exist:

  1. Click Create New Channel.
  2. Select the notification method.
  3. If using email, enter one or more recipients.
  4. Click Save.

Once configured, Auvik will generate alerts when the service transitions to a down state.

Edit a Service Monitor

To modify an existing service monitor:

  1. Navigate to Inventory > All Services.
  2. Select the service.
  3. Click Edit.
  4. Make the desired changes.
  5. Click Save.

For Port Checks, you can add additional ports by clicking +.

Changes take effect immediately after saving.

Delete a Service Monitor

To permanently remove a service monitor:

  1. Navigate to Inventory > All Services.
  2. Select the service or services.
  3. Click Delete.
  4. Confirm the action.

Warning: Deleting a service monitor removes its configuration and associated monitoring history. If you only want to stop monitoring, consider using Don't Monitor instead.

Choosing Between Port Checks and Cloud Ping Checks

Use Case Recommended Monitor
Verify HTTPS availability on a firewall Port Check
Monitor SSH availability on a switch Port Check
Monitor a public website Cloud Ping Check
Monitor Internet connectivity Cloud Ping Check
Monitor an internal application port Port Check
Monitor a public VPN gateway Cloud Ping Check

Using the appropriate monitor type helps reduce unnecessary alerts and provides more accurate service status information.

Additional Information

Service monitors provide operational visibility beyond traditional SNMP monitoring by validating that services are actually available and responding.

Combining service monitoring with Auvik alerting allows you to detect outages quickly and receive notifications before users report problems.
