Interpreting interface temperature values reported in milli-Celsius

Follow

Symptom

An interface or sensor may display an extremely high temperature, such as 31,789°C.

Cause

Some devices report temperature values in milli-Celsius, which represents thousandths of a degree Celsius.

For example:

  • Reported value: 31,789
  • Converted value: 31.789°C

Convert the temperature value

Divide the reported value by 1,000 to convert milli-Celsius to Celsius.

Examples:

  • 31,789 ÷ 1,000 = 31.789°C
  • 45,000 ÷ 1,000 = 45°C
  • 72,500 ÷ 1,000 = 72.5°C

If the value is not converted automatically

If the dashboard does not automatically convert the value for a specific device or sensor, identify the unit in the alert name or description so the reading is not misinterpreted.

When to contact Support

Contact Auvik Support if:

  • Values are converted inconsistently across similar devices.
  • The reported unit appears incorrect.
  • You need the interface to standardize the unit for a specific MIB.

Include the device name, sensor or interface, OID, reported value, converted value, and screenshots.
