Overview
Some EnGenius access points, including the EAP1200H, expose multiple virtual MAC addresses for different SSIDs or VLANs. These virtual MAC addresses are also known as BSSIDs.
If the management IP is associated with changing or multiple MAC addresses, Auvik may create duplicate device records or continue to recreate older records.
What causes the duplicates
Duplicates may occur when:
- The management IP is associated with a virtual MAC address instead of the access point’s primary MAC address.
- The same management IP is used by interfaces with different MAC addresses.
- Stale IP-to-MAC bindings remain on the DHCP server.
- Auvik retains device records associated with previous virtual MAC addresses.
- SNMP does not consistently report the access point’s base or system MAC address.
Resolve duplicate access points
1. Verify the management identity
Confirm that:
- The management IP is assigned to the access point’s management interface.
- The management interface uses the access point’s base or primary MAC address.
- The management IP is not assigned to an interface that can rotate between virtual MAC addresses.
- The management IP is not shared with another access point or device.
2. Clean up stale IP-to-MAC bindings
Ask your network administrator to review the DHCP and network records for the access point’s management IP.
Remove stale bindings associated with old virtual MAC addresses and confirm that the management IP resolves consistently to the access point’s base MAC address.
3. Verify SNMP identity
Confirm that:
- SNMP is enabled on the access point.
- The SNMP credentials in Auvik are correct.
- The Auvik collector can reach the access point’s management IP.
- SNMP reports the access point’s system identity consistently.
4. Verify LLDP and switch information
Enable LLDP on the connected switch, where supported, and confirm that the access point reports its chassis or base MAC address.
Review the switch’s MAC address table to confirm that the access point’s management MAC is associated with the expected switch port.
5. Remove stale Auvik records
After the management IP and MAC associations are corrected:
- Ask an authorized Auvik administrator to remove duplicate device records associated with old virtual MAC addresses.
- Mark virtual MAC addresses that should not appear as standalone devices as Ignored, if that option is available.
- Run discovery again.
- Confirm that the access point appears as a single device using its current management identity.
Do not delete a device record if you are unsure whether it contains the current device or important historical data.
If duplicates continue to return
Contact Auvik Support and provide:
- Access point management IP.
- Access point base or primary MAC address.
- List of virtual MAC addresses or BSSIDs.
- EnGenius model and firmware version.
- A short LLDP or switch MAC-table capture.
- Screenshots of the duplicate device records.
Support can review persistent IP records and determine whether additional discovery tuning is required for the access point model.
Changes to DHCP, SNMP, LLDP, switch configuration, and Auvik device records should be performed by an authorized administrator.
