Supermicro IPMI Device Misclassified as a Server

Follow

Overview

A Supermicro IPMI controller may appear as a Server in Auvik instead of as a baseboard management controller or out-of-band device.

This can happen when Auvik receives SNMP information from the host operating system, third-party SNMP software, or stale data instead of the IPMI controller.

What to check

1. Verify the monitored IP

Confirm that the monitored IP belongs to the Supermicro IPMI controller:

  • Verify that the IP is assigned to the dedicated IPMI management interface.
  • Confirm that the MAC address belongs to the expected BMC.
  • Confirm that the IP is not assigned to the server operating system or another device.

2. Confirm the SNMP responder

The IPMI controller should be the only device or service responding to SNMP queries on the IPMI management IP.

Ask a server or network administrator to:

  • Disable host or third-party SNMP agents that respond on the IPMI management network.
  • Confirm that host SNMP services are not bound to the IPMI interface.
  • Confirm that routing does not allow another SNMP agent to respond for the BMC IP.

3. Verify IPMI SNMP configuration

Confirm that:

  • SNMP is enabled on the IPMI controller.
  • The SNMP credentials in Auvik match the BMC configuration.
  • The Auvik collector is permitted to query the IPMI management IP.

4. Validate the SNMP identity

From a system on the same network, an authorized administrator can run the following commands:

snmpget -v2c -c <community> <IPMI_IP> 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.2.0

This retrieves the sysObjectID.

snmpget -v2c -c <community> <IPMI_IP> 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1.0

This retrieves the sysDescr.

The returned values should identify the IPMI controller or BMC, not the host operating system or third-party SNMP software.

5. Remove stale data and rediscover

After confirming that the IPMI controller is the only SNMP responder:

  1. Ask an authorized Auvik administrator to remove the misclassified device record.
  2. Rediscover the IPMI management IP.
  3. Confirm that Auvik identifies the device correctly.

Do not remove the device record if you are unsure whether it represents an active device or contains important historical data.

If the device remains misclassified

Contact Auvik Support and provide:

  • IPMI IP address.
  • Supermicro make and model.
  • IPMI firmware version.
  • Returned sysObjectID.
  • Returned sysDescr.
  • Classification shown in Auvik.
  • Confirmation that the BMC is the only SNMP responder at that IP.

Network, server, IPMI, and SNMP changes must be performed by an authorized administrator.
