Devices from One Site Appear in Another Site's Inventory

Follow

Overview

Devices may appear in the wrong site's inventory if the same network or device is included in the discovery configuration for multiple sites. This can occur when using either a shared collector or individual collectors assigned to different sites.

This article explains the most common causes of this behaviour and how to correct the site assignment.

Symptoms

You may observe one or more of the following:

  • Devices from one site appear in another site's inventory.
  • Network maps display devices that belong to a different site.
  • Devices are associated with an unexpected site after discovery.
  • The same device appears to be discovered under multiple sites.

Cause

Auvik associates discovered devices with a site based on the site's configured discovery and scanning settings. If the same subnet or network is configured for discovery under multiple sites, Auvik may associate devices with the incorrect site.

This situation can occur when:

  • A shared collector is used to monitor multiple sites with overlapping discovery ranges.
  • Multiple collectors are configured to discover the same subnet or network under different sites.
  • Discovery or scanning settings have been configured with overlapping or incorrect subnet assignments.

Resolution

Review the discovery configuration for all affected sites and ensure that each network is assigned only to the site responsible for monitoring it.

  1. Open each affected site in Auvik.
  2. Navigate to Discovery or Scanning settings.
  3. Review the configured discovery subnets and network ranges.
  4. Verify that each subnet or network is assigned to only one site.
  5. Remove or correct any overlapping or incorrect discovery ranges.
  6. Save your changes.
  7. Trigger a rediscovery or allow the next scheduled discovery cycle to complete.

Best Practices

  • Configure each subnet or network to be discovered by only one site.
  • Review discovery settings whenever adding new sites or modifying network ranges.
  • When using shared collectors, carefully plan subnet assignments to prevent overlapping discovery.
  • When using multiple collectors, ensure discovery ranges do not overlap unless intentionally required.

Troubleshooting

If devices continue to appear under the wrong site after updating the discovery configuration:

  • Verify that no subnet or network is configured for discovery under more than one site.
  • Confirm that the collectors have connectivity to the intended networks.
  • Ensure the updated discovery settings have been saved successfully.
  • Allow sufficient time for discovery and polling to complete before validating the results.
