Overview
In some cases, Auvik support may restart a site instance to help restore monitoring services or resolve backend issues. This article explains what to expect during and after a restart, including any impact on monitoring and user access.
Note: Site restarts are performed by Auvik support and do not restart the collector host or agent.
What happens during a site restart
When a site instance is restarted:
- Monitoring services for that site temporarily stop
- Device polling and performance data collection pause
- Active remote access sessions may disconnect
These interruptions are temporary and services resume automatically once the restart is complete.
Impact on user access
Affected
- Device monitoring and polling are paused
- Performance data collection may show temporary gaps
- Active remote sessions (such as tunnels or browser sessions) may disconnect and need to be re-established
Not affected
- Access to the Auvik cloud portal
- User roles and permissions
- User invitations and account management
- The collector host or agent state
Restarting a site does not resolve issues related to user roles, permissions, or invitations.
How long a restart takes
- Typical duration: A few minutes
- Possible range: 1 minute to up to 1 hour, depending on the environment and workload
Larger or heavily utilized environments may take longer to fully resume normal operation.
What to expect after a restart
Once the restart is complete:
- Monitoring and polling resume automatically
- Devices begin reporting data again
- Any disconnected remote sessions can be re-established
You may notice a short delay before all devices return to a normal polling state.
When support may perform a restart
Auvik support may initiate a site restart in scenarios such as:
- Monitoring or polling is not functioning correctly
- A site instance becomes unresponsive
- Backend services associated with the site require recovery
Summary
A site restart temporarily pauses monitoring and may interrupt active remote sessions, but it does not affect user access to the Auvik cloud portal, user management settings, or the collector host. Restarts are performed by Auvik support and are typically completed within a few minutes, with full service restoration shortly after.
