How to resolve the “An error occurred fetching the Site Registration Key: error retrieving secret” error

Follow

Overview

This error occurs when Auvik is unable to retrieve the secret required to generate or display a Site Registration Key (SRK). This can prevent the deployment of collectors or agents within a site.

You may see the following message:

“An error occurred fetching the Site Registration Key: error retrieving secret”

Cause

Common causes include:

  • Insufficient user permissions
  • Expired or invalid session
  • Browser cache or extension interference
  • Recent site or collector changes
  • Network or proxy restrictions
  • Temporary backend retrieval issue

Resolution

1. Verify Site and Permissions

  • Confirm you are on the correct site/tenant
  • Ensure your role has permission to manage Site Registration Keys

2. Refresh Your Session

  • Sign out and back in
  • Complete any MFA prompts

3. Regenerate the Site Registration Key

  • Navigate to Endpoint > Site Registration Key
  • Attempt to regenerate the key

For detailed steps, see: How to regenerate a Site Registration Key (SRK)

4. Rule Out Browser Issues

  • Use an incognito/private window
  • Try another browser
  • Clear cache and disable extensions

5. Retry After Changes

If you recently made site or collector changes, wait 2–5 minutes and try again.

6. Check Network and System

  • Ensure HTTPS (port 443) access to Auvik
  • Verify firewall/proxy is not blocking requests
  • Confirm system time is accurate

7. Try Another Account

  • Test with another admin account or elevated permissions

Next Steps

If the issue continues, provide Auvik Support with:

  • Site/tenant name
  • User email
  • Approximate time of the error
  • Screenshot of the error
  • Browser console output (Network/Console tabs)
