How to enable SNMP on a Tripp Lite UPS

Follow

Auvik uses SNMP to collect status, health, and monitoring information from supported Tripp Lite UPS devices.

Note: Tripp Lite devices use a variety of network management cards and firmware versions. The exact menu names and options may differ between models. These instructions should be used as a general guideline.

If you require assistance with a specific model, contact Auvik Support.

Before You Begin

To enable SNMP, you must have:

  • Administrative access to the UPS web interface
  • A supported network management card installed (such as an SNMPWEBCARD or equivalent)
  • Network connectivity between the UPS and the Auvik collector

Verify that:

  • The UPS is reachable from the Auvik collector.
  • UDP port 161 is not blocked by a firewall or access control list.
  • The management card is operating normally.

Enable SNMP

  1. Log in to the PowerAlert web interface.
  2. Navigate to:

    Preferences > Network

  3. Select Services from the navigation menu.
  4. Enable one of the following SNMP versions:

SNMPv2c (Recommended for Compatibility)

  • Enable SNMPv2c
  • Enable Automatically Start SNMP
  • Configure a read-only community string

SNMPv1

If required by your environment:

  • Enable SNMPv1
  • Enable Automatically Start SNMP

Recommendation: SNMPv2c is preferred over SNMPv1 because it provides improved functionality and broader device support.

SNMPv3 (If Supported)

Some newer Tripp Lite/Eaton network management cards support SNMPv3.

If available:

  1. Create an SNMPv3 user.
  2. Configure the authentication settings.
  3. Configure privacy (encryption) settings if required.
  4. Record the credentials for later use in Auvik.

Recommendation: SNMPv3 is the most secure option because it supports authentication and encryption.

  1. Save your changes.

Configure Credentials in Auvik

If you configured a custom community string or SNMPv3 credentials:

  1. Navigate to Discovery > SNMP Credentials.
  2. Click Add SNMP Credentials.
  3. Enter the appropriate SNMP information.
  4. Save the credential.

Auvik will attempt to authenticate during the next discovery cycle.

Verify Monitoring

After enabling SNMP:

  1. Confirm the UPS appears in Auvik.
  2. Verify that monitoring information is being collected.
  3. Confirm battery, input power, output power, and health information are visible if supported by the device.

Depending on polling intervals, newly collected information may take several minutes to appear.

Troubleshooting

If Auvik cannot monitor the UPS:

Verify SNMP Is Running

Confirm:

  • SNMP is enabled.
  • Automatically Start SNMP is enabled.
  • The configuration has been saved.

Verify Credentials

Confirm:

  • The community string matches the value configured in Auvik.
  • SNMPv3 credentials match exactly if using SNMPv3.

Verify Network Connectivity

Ensure:

  • The UPS management card is reachable from the collector.
  • UDP port 161 is permitted.
  • No firewalls or ACLs are blocking SNMP traffic.

Verify the Management Card

Some UPS models require a separate network management card before SNMP monitoring is available.

Confirm that:

  • The management card is installed.
  • The card is functioning properly.
  • The card firmware is up to date.

Additional Information

With SNMP configured, Auvik can collect information such as:

  • UPS status
  • Battery health
  • Runtime estimates
  • Input and output voltage
  • Load information
  • Environmental and alert data (where supported)

Available metrics vary by UPS model, network management card, and firmware version.
