How to enable SNMP on APC UPS devices

Follow

Auvik can discover, monitor, and send you alerts on your APC Uninterrupted Power Supplies (UPS). To do that, SNMP needs to be enabled on the UPS.

To enable SNMP, you need:

  • Administrative access to the web-based graphical user interface (GUI) of the UPS, and
  • A network management card installed on the UPS.

We’ll be working with SNMPv1, which is the most common version deployed across APC’s UPS lineup.

Note: Due to variations in the interface on various models and firmware versions of APC devices, these steps should be considered a guideline. If you’d like help configuring your specific APC device, contact Auvik support.

Example SNMP configuration for an APC Smart-UPS 1500

  1. Navigate to Configuration > Network > SNMPv1 > Access.
  2. Check Enable SNMPv1 access.
  3. Click Apply.
  4. Navigate to Configuration > Network > SNMPv1 > Access Control.
  5. To edit an existing default community name, click on the community.
  6. Apply the changes you want to make.
  7. Click Apply to save the changes.
  8. If you’re using a non-standard community string, add it to Auvik by going to Discovery > SNMP Credentials > Add SNMP Credential.

Example SNMP configuration for an APC UPS equipped with an APC AP9631 management card

  1. Log into the administrative web interface.
  2. Navigate to Administration > Network > SNMPv1 > options
  3. Make sure the "Enable SNMPv1" checkbox is checked.
  4. If you’re satisfied with the default community strings and access control, you’re done. If not, you can change the community string or restrict access to certain IPs.
    1. For restricting access, use the following notation for the NMS IP/Host Name:

A host name or a specific IP address (such as 149.225.12.1) allows access only by the NMS at that location.

IP addresses that contain 255 restrict access as follows:

149.225.12.255: Access only by an NMS on the 149.225.12 segment. 149.225.255.255: Access only by an NMS on the 149.225 segment.
149.255.255.255: Access only by an NMS on the 149 segment.
0.0.0.0 (the default setting), which can also be expressed as 255.255.255.255: Access by any NMS on any segment.
  1. Save the configuration.
  2. If you’re using a non-standard community string, add it to Auvik by going to Discovery > SNMP Credentials > Add SNMP Credential.

You’re all done. Auvik will now discover, monitor, and send you alerts about your APC devices.
