For Auvik to discover a Windows device, you first need to enable Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP).
Some versions of Windows block all incoming ICMP packets through the Windows firewall. But Auvik needs these packets. So here’s how to configure a device to allow ICMP packets through the firewall:
- From the Start menu, open the Control Panel.
- Select Windows Firewall.
- Click Advanced Settings.
- Select Inbound Rules.
- Locate the File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request - ICMPv4-In) rules. There should be two or three of them—the number will depend on the Windows operating system you’re on. Right-click on Public and Private rules. Select Enable Rule.
- Close the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security window.
- Close the Windows Firewall Control Panel window.
Now that ICMP is enabled, you’re ready to enable your computers for Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) monitoring.
