How can we help?

How do I launch the terminal?

Follow

The terminal emulates any other terminal you might be used to using on your network. The only difference is that it’s accessed directly within Auvik so you don’t have to leave your Auvik dashboard to check or modify your devices.

The Auvik terminal auto-connects to devices using Secure Shell (SSH) by default. If SSH doesn’t work, then Auvik Telnets in using the IP address we have on record.

How to launch a terminal window

Launching a terminal connection opens a new browser tab or window, depending on how your browser is configured to handle new windows.

Note: The Terminal button is only enabled for devices that allow for connection by SSH or Telnet.

  1. From a device dashboard, hover over the Remote Management button and click Terminal.

  2. Enter the required credentials, if requested *. Click Connect.

* If you’ve recently logged into your Auvik account, or have recently accessed the terminal window for the same device, you may not be prompted to re-authenticate.

How to use the terminal options

Copy scrollback

There are two ways to copy text from a terminal window into a notepad. One is to highlight the specific text and use the appropriate keyboard actions:

  • For Windows desktops/servers: CTRL+Insert to copy and SHIFT+Insert to paste
  • For Mac OS: CMD+C to copy and CMD+V to paste
  • Right-click on the browser window and click Copy

If you want to copy everything that appears in the terminal window, click the Copy scrollback () button in the top right corner of the terminal window.

Clear buffer

If you find the buffer has gotten a bit out of control, you can always wipe the screen clean by clicking the Clear buffer () button in the top right corner of the terminal window.

Terminal settings

The font size in the terminal window defaults to 13 px. The cursor appears as a box and the scrollback is set for 1,000 lines.

You can changes these settings. Any changes you make apply only to you. The new settings are applied immediately to the current terminal window and will also be used for any new terminal windows you open.

To modify the settings, click the Terminal Settings () button in the top right corner of the terminal window. Make your changes, then click Save.

How to update your connection

Connections to a device through a terminal window can be disconnected, reconnected, or duplicated.

Disconnecting

To disconnect from a terminal session:

  • Type “exit” in the window, or
  • Click the power icon () in the top left of the window and select Disconnect.

After you choose to disconnect from your session (or the device times out your session), you receive a connection closed prompt. To continue with closing the session, click Close.

If you no longer require your session, remember to close the browser window.

Reconnecting

If your session has been disconnected, as long as the terminal window is open, you can reconnect by clicking Reconnect from the connection closed prompt.

Or click the power icon () in the top left of the window and select Reconnect. When you reconnect, you’ll be asked to re-enter the appropriate credentials.

Duplicate a connection

If you need to connect to the device through multiple terminal windows, click the power icon in the top left of the window and select Duplicate. A second window to the device opens. Again, you’ll be asked to re-enter the appropriate credentials.
