Sideloading (installing) Browser Extensions, if required

Follow

On most Windows devices, installing the Auvik SaaS Management agent automatically deploys the required browser extensions for supported browsers.

You normally do not need to deploy the browser extensions separately when using the Auvik SaaS Management Windows Desktop Agent.

This article describes how to manually deploy the browser extensions using browser policies when automatic deployment isn't available or when your organization requires browser extensions to be managed separately.

Important: If you're deploying the Auvik SaaS Management Windows Desktop Agent, don't create a separate browser extension deployment policy unless required by your environment. The Desktop Agent automatically configures the required browser extensions.

Browser Extension ADMX/ADM Files

Use the appropriate browser policy templates for your environment:

Google Chrome

Download the Google Chrome ADM/ADMX templates from the Google Chrome Enterprise website.

Mozilla Firefox

Download the Firefox ADMX policy templates from the Mozilla Policy Templates repository.

Microsoft Edge

Download the Microsoft Edge policy templates from the Microsoft Edge for Business website.

Installing Browser Extensions

Browser policies can be configured using ADM or ADMX policy templates.

ADM templates are intended for older Windows environments, while ADMX templates are used with current supported Windows versions.

These templates provide the policy settings used to configure browser behavior, including the policies that control which extensions are installed.

The browser reads the configured policy and installs the specified Auvik SaaS Management extension.

Installing the Browser Extension for Google Chrome

  1. Download the Google Chrome templates and documentation.
  2. Extract the downloaded ZIP file.
  3. Open the windows folder and then the admx folder.
  4. Copy chrome.admx and the appropriate language files, such as the en-US files, to the location where policy definitions are stored in your environment. For a local Windows installation, this is typically:

    C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions\

  5. Open the Group Policy Editor.
  6. Navigate to:

Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Google > Google Chrome > Extensions

  7. Open Configure the list of force-installed apps and extensions.
  8. Select Enabled, then select Show.
  9. Add the following value:

    kieikihnfebppciimgpalbdjkjiahnlk;https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx

  10. Select OK to save the extension configuration.
  11. Select OK again to save the policy.

The Auvik SaaS Management extension will be installed according to the configured Chrome policy.

Installing the Browser Extension for Mozilla Firefox

  1. Download the Firefox Policy Templates.
  2. Extract the downloaded files.
  3. Copy the .admx file to:

    C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions

  4. Copy the appropriate .adml language file to the corresponding language directory. For example:

    C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions\en-US

  5. Open Group Policy Management and navigate to:

User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Mozilla > Firefox > Extensions

  6. Select the policy for extensions to install.
  7. Select Enabled, then select Show.
  8. Enter the following value:

    saaslio@saaslio.com

  9. Select OK to save the configuration.

Installing the Browser Extension for Microsoft Edge

Before you begin

The Auvik SaaS Management Windows Desktop Agent automatically installs the Microsoft Edge extension using the Edge ExtensionInstallForcelist policy.

If you're deploying the Windows Desktop Agent, you normally don't need to configure an additional Microsoft Edge extension policy through Group Policy, Microsoft Intune, or another endpoint-management platform.

When the extension is installed through the ExtensionInstallForcelist policy, users aren't prompted to confirm or enable the extension.

Only use the following manual deployment steps when you need to manage the Microsoft Edge extension separately from the Auvik SaaS Management Windows Desktop Agent.

Current Microsoft Edge extension

The current Auvik SaaS Management Microsoft Edge extension ID is:

edgejegejhhmhfhdacmmgmkaefkjkjlf

Use the following Edge extension update URL:

https://edge.microsoft.com/extensionwebstorebase/v1/crx

The complete value for the force-installed extension policy is:

edgejegejhhmhfhdacmmgmkaefkjkjlf;https://edge.microsoft.com/extensionwebstorebase/v1/crx

Configure the Microsoft Edge extension using Group Policy

  1. Download the Microsoft Edge Policy Templates if you haven't already installed them.
  2. In the Group Policy Editor, create a new GPO for the Auvik SaaS Management deployment or edit an existing GPO.
  3. Navigate to:

User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge > Extensions

  4. Open Control which extensions are installed silently.
  5. Select Enabled, then select Show.
  6. Enter the following value:

    edgejegejhhmhfhdacmmgmkaefkjkjlf;https://edge.microsoft.com/extensionwebstorebase/v1/crx

  7. Select OK.
  8. Apply the Group Policy to the required users or devices.

The extension is force-installed by Microsoft Edge and doesn't require the user to confirm or enable it.

Previous Microsoft Edge extension ID

The following Microsoft Edge extension ID was previously documented for Auvik SaaS Management:

fbgiiopidibajnhdbmfcbgjkdmehhjck

Don't use this extension ID for new deployments.

If you previously deployed this extension using Microsoft Intune, Group Policy, or another browser-management policy, review and remove or update that policy before deploying the current extension.

If the previous extension remains configured through an administrator-created policy while the Auvik SaaS Management Windows Desktop Agent installs the current extension, both Auvik SaaS Management extensions can appear in Microsoft Edge.

The current Microsoft Edge extension ID is:

edgejegejhhmhfhdacmmgmkaefkjkjlf

If you're using the Auvik SaaS Management Windows Desktop Agent, you can remove the administrator-created policy for the previous extension. The Desktop Agent will continue to manage installation of the current Microsoft Edge extension.

Forcing Group Policy to Update

After changing the browser extension policies, you can force Windows to apply the updated Group Policy.

  1. Open PowerShell or Command Prompt as an administrator.
  2. Run:

    gpupdate /force

  3. Allow the Group Policy update to complete.
  4. Open the applicable browser and confirm that the Auvik SaaS Management extension is installed.

Troubleshooting Microsoft Edge

Two Auvik SaaS Management extensions are installed

If two Auvik SaaS Management extensions appear in Microsoft Edge, check whether an existing Microsoft Intune, Group Policy, or other endpoint-management policy is still deploying the previous extension ID:

fbgiiopidibajnhdbmfcbgjkdmehhjck

The current extension installed by the Auvik SaaS Management Windows Desktop Agent is:

edgejegejhhmhfhdacmmgmkaefkjkjlf

Remove or update the administrator-created policy that deploys the previous extension.

Users are prompted to enable the Edge extension

When the current Auvik SaaS Management Edge extension is installed through the ExtensionInstallForcelist policy, users aren't required to confirm or enable the extension.

If users receive an extension prompt, check the Microsoft Edge policies applied to the device and verify that the current Auvik SaaS Management extension is being force-installed.

Also check for manually installed extensions or existing policies that deploy the previous Auvik SaaS Management Edge extension.
