Deploying Auvik SaaS Management on a Windows Device

Follow

The Auvik SaaS Management Windows Desktop Agent allows you to discover and monitor SaaS application usage on Windows devices.

When the Desktop Agent is installed, it automatically installs and configures the Auvik SaaS Management browser extensions required for supported browsers.

Before you begin

Before deploying the Auvik SaaS Management Desktop Agent, ensure that:

  • The device is running a supported version of Windows.
  • You have administrator permissions on the device or an appropriate remote monitoring and management (RMM) or software deployment solution.
  • The device can communicate with the required Auvik SaaS Management services.
  • Any browser management policies in your environment do not prevent the Auvik SaaS Management browser extension from being installed.

Download the Windows Desktop Agent

Download the Auvik SaaS Management Windows Desktop Agent from your Auvik SaaS Management environment.

The installer can be deployed manually or through your organization's preferred software deployment platform, such as an RMM solution or Microsoft Intune.

Install the Windows Desktop Agent

Run the installer with administrator permissions.

For larger deployments, you can use your organization's software deployment or RMM solution to install the Desktop Agent across multiple Windows devices.

After installation, the Desktop Agent runs in the background and installs the Auvik SaaS Management extensions for supported browsers.

Browser extension installation

The Auvik SaaS Management Windows Desktop Agent automatically installs and configures the required browser extensions.

You do not normally need to deploy the browser extensions separately when deploying the Windows Desktop Agent.

Microsoft Edge

For Microsoft Edge, the Windows Desktop Agent installs the Auvik SaaS Management extension using the Microsoft Edge ExtensionInstallForcelist policy.

The current Auvik SaaS Management Microsoft Edge extension ID is:

edgejegejhhmhfhdacmmgmkaefkjkjlf

Because the extension is installed using the ExtensionInstallForcelist policy, users are not prompted to confirm or enable the extension after the Desktop Agent is installed.

Administrators using the Windows Desktop Agent therefore do not need to create a separate Microsoft Intune or Group Policy configuration to install the Auvik SaaS Management Edge extension.

Important: The previous Microsoft Edge extension ID, fbgiiopidibajnhdbmfcbgjkdmehhjck, should not be used for new deployments. If this extension was previously deployed using Microsoft Intune, Group Policy, or another browser management policy, remove the existing deployment policy. Otherwise, both Auvik SaaS Management Edge extensions may be present on the device.

If your organization needs to deploy browser extensions separately from the Windows Desktop Agent, see Sideloading (installing) Browser Extensions, if required for deployment instructions.

Google Chrome and other supported Chromium-based browsers

The Windows Desktop Agent automatically installs the appropriate Auvik SaaS Management browser extension for supported browsers.

A separate extension deployment is normally not required when the Desktop Agent is installed.

If browser policies in your organization prevent the extension from being installed automatically, see Sideloading (installing) Browser Extensions, if required for instructions on deploying the browser extension through your organization's browser management policies.

Verify the installation

After deploying the Windows Desktop Agent:

  1. Confirm that the Auvik SaaS Management Desktop Agent is installed and running on the Windows device.
  2. Open a supported browser.
  3. Review the browser's installed extensions and confirm that the Auvik SaaS Management extension is installed.
  4. For Microsoft Edge, confirm that the current Auvik SaaS Management extension is present.
  5. Confirm that SaaS application activity from the device appears in Auvik SaaS Management.

Microsoft Edge users should not need to manually confirm or enable the extension when it has been installed by the Windows Desktop Agent.

Deploying with Microsoft Intune or Group Policy

If you are deploying the Windows Desktop Agent through Microsoft Intune, Group Policy, an RMM solution, or another endpoint-management platform, you generally only need to deploy the Desktop Agent.

The Desktop Agent manages installation of the required Auvik SaaS Management browser extension.

Do not create an additional Edge ExtensionInstallForcelist policy for the Auvik SaaS Management extension unless your deployment requires the browser extension to be managed independently of the Desktop Agent.

If an existing policy deploys the previous Edge extension ID (fbgiiopidibajnhdbmfcbgjkdmehhjck), remove or update that policy to prevent both extensions from being installed.

Troubleshooting

The Edge extension isn't installed

Confirm that:

  • The Auvik SaaS Management Windows Desktop Agent is installed and running.
  • Microsoft Edge policies are not blocking extension installation.
  • Another Microsoft Intune, Group Policy, or endpoint-management policy is not overriding the ExtensionInstallForcelist configuration.
  • The device can access the Microsoft Edge extension service.

Two Auvik SaaS Management extensions appear in Edge

Check whether your organization previously deployed the Auvik SaaS Management Edge extension using Microsoft Intune, Group Policy, or another browser-management solution.

The previous Edge extension ID is:

fbgiiopidibajnhdbmfcbgjkdmehhjck

The current Edge extension ID is:

edgejegejhhmhfhdacmmgmkaefkjkjlf

If the previous extension is being installed through an administrator-created policy, remove that policy. The Windows Desktop Agent will continue to manage installation of the current Auvik SaaS Management Edge extension.

Edge asks the user to enable an extension

The Auvik SaaS Management Edge extension installed by the Windows Desktop Agent uses the ExtensionInstallForcelist policy and does not normally require user confirmation.

If a user is prompted to enable or confirm an extension, review the device's Edge extension policies and check for manually installed, previously deployed, or conflicting Auvik SaaS Management extensions.
