How can we help?

Cannot pull availability data for compute devices through the API or Power BI

Follow

What’s happening

You can retrieve availability data for network devices, but availability data for compute devices—such as servers, hypervisors, or storage devices—is missing from the API or Power BI results.

This may be caused by:

  • The device type not being included in the selected availability dataset.
  • The Power BI template filtering availability data to specific network device types.
  • The compute device not being fully managed or monitored.
  • The API account not having access to the required site, tenant, or endpoint.

Check the API account and site access

Confirm that the API account:

  • Has API access enabled.
  • Has the required read permissions for the endpoint being queried.
  • Can access the site or tenant containing the compute device.
  • Has access to every site or tenant included in a multi-tenant request.

Reports access and API access are separate. Having access to Reports in the Auvik user interface does not automatically determine which API data the account can retrieve.

Check the device monitoring status

In Auvik, confirm that the compute device:

  • Is discovered.
  • Is managed or monitored.
  • Has a current status and recent monitoring data.
  • Has the required credentials or monitoring source configured, such as SNMP or WMI.

A device that is only discovered, unmanaged, or not returning monitoring data may not provide availability data.

Check the endpoint or Power BI dataset

Some availability datasets and Power BI templates are limited to network device types such as:

  • Firewalls
  • Routers
  • Controllers
  • Switches
  • Layer 3 switches
  • Stacks

Compute devices may not be included in those specific datasets even when they are visible and monitored in Auvik.

Review the endpoint documentation or Power BI query to confirm which device types are supported. Do not assume that an endpoint returning network availability data also returns availability data for servers, hypervisors, or storage devices.

Workarounds for compute availability

If compute availability is required:

  • Use the Auvik Infrastructure Availability report if it includes the required compute device types.
  • Use a statistics or status endpoint that explicitly supports the device type.
  • If status history or time-series data is available, use it to calculate uptime or availability in Power BI.
  • Confirm with Auvik Support which dataset or endpoint supports the required compute device type in your environment.

If the device is missing from the results

Check the following:

  1. Confirm the device type shown in Auvik.
  2. Confirm the device is managed and has recent monitoring data.
  3. Verify the API account’s site and tenant access.
  4. Confirm the endpoint or Power BI query supports that device type.
  5. Check whether filters, tenant parameters, or device-type filters exclude the device.

Contact Support

If the compute device should be included but is still missing, provide:

  • The API endpoint or Power BI query.
  • The device type and example device.
  • The Auvik site or tenant.
  • The API account’s role and site scope.
  • Confirmation that the device is managed and monitored.
  • A sample response showing the expected and missing data.

Do not include API keys, passwords, or authorization headers in a support request.
