Overview
In Auvik, user roles define permissions and access levels within the platform. However, roles do not control whether a user receives alerts or notifications. This distinction is important when configuring users—such as billing or finance personnel—who require access to the system but should not receive operational alerts.
This article explains the limitation and outlines practical workarounds to prevent specific users from receiving notifications.
Limitation: Roles and Notifications
Auvik currently does not support configuring roles to inherently include or exclude alert and notification delivery.
Key Point:
Notification settings are managed independently of user roles.
As a result, assigning a user a restricted or billing-focused role does not prevent alerts from being sent to them.
Recommended Workarounds
To effectively prevent a user from receiving alerts, apply the following configuration strategies:
1. Manage Notification Channels and Recipients
Review all configured alert delivery channels and ensure the user is not included as a recipient.
Common channels include:
- Email notifications
- Slack or Microsoft Teams integrations
- Webhook or third-party integrations
Action:
Remove the user from any recipient lists associated with these channels.
2. Remove or Disable Direct Delivery Targets
Some alert configurations may target individuals directly (e.g., specific email addresses).
Action:
- Remove the user’s email address from direct notification rules
- Avoid assigning alerts to individual users when not required
3. Use Shared Destinations for Alerts
Instead of sending alerts to individuals, route notifications to shared destinations.
Recommended options:
- Team or operations email inbox (e.g.,
noc@company.com) - Slack or Teams channels monitored by appropriate staff
- Centralized incident management systems
Benefit:
Prevents unnecessary alert exposure while maintaining visibility for responsible teams.
4. Establish and Enforce a Notification Policy
Define internal guidelines for user onboarding and alert configuration.
Example policy:
- Billing or finance users must not be added to any alerting channels
- Notification recipient lists must be reviewed after onboarding new users
- Periodic audits should verify compliance
Result
By combining role-based access with proper notification configuration:
- Users can log in and perform their required tasks (e.g., billing, reporting)
- Alerts are only delivered to operational personnel
- Noise and unnecessary notifications are minimized
Summary
While Auvik roles do not control alert delivery, administrators can achieve the desired outcome through careful management of notification channels and recipients. Implementing shared alert destinations and enforcing internal policies ensures that non-operational users remain unaffected by system alerts.
