Monitoring High Availability (HA) firewall or network-device pairs in Auvik helps identify failovers, role changes, and synchronization issues.
Auvik’s native HA monitoring and alerting depend on the vendor, device model, firmware, and information exposed through supported monitoring methods.
What can be monitored in an HA pair?
Depending on the vendor and device capabilities, Auvik may monitor:
- HA state or role changes, such as Active to Standby.
- Failover events.
- HA synchronization status.
- Device status for secondary devices that respond to ICMP and SNMP.
Auvik can interpret supported HA information primarily through SNMP polling, device availability, and Alerts v2 conditions.
How to confirm native HA support
Native HA monitoring is available only for supported firewalls and devices.
To check whether Auvik recognizes an HA pair:
- Open the device details page.
- Look for an HA or firewall-cluster widget.
- Confirm that the HA members, roles, and synchronization status are displayed.
- Review the available device alert conditions for HA-related options.
If the HA widget and HA alert conditions are not available, the device may not currently have native HA support in Auvik.
Creating Alerts v2 HA alerts
For supported HA devices:
- Open Alerts v2.
- Create or edit an alert in the Device category.
- Select the available HA condition, such as HA Failover has Occurred.
- Set the condition to True.
- Configure the alert scope and notification channels.
- Create a trigger message using the available HA variables, if required.
- Save and enable the alert.
Common HA variables may include:
firewallHaInfo.failoverHasHappenedfirewallHaInfo.syncIsHealthyfirewallHaInfo.masterSerialNumberfirewallHaInfo.clusterMode
Avoid adding an alert delay to failover or HA synchronization alerts unless your operational requirements specifically call for one. A delay may postpone notification of a genuine loss of redundancy.
Clear conditions for HA alerts
You can configure an HA alert with either:
- No clear condition, which requires manual dismissal where supported.
- A custom clear condition, such as HA Cluster Sync is Healthy = True.
Using the synchronization status as the clear condition allows the alert to remain active until the HA pair returns to a healthy synchronized state.
WatchGuard HA monitoring
Auvik provides instructions for enabling SNMP on WatchGuard firewalls. SNMP must be configured on the WatchGuard device, the appropriate firewall policy must allow polling traffic, and the matching SNMP credential must be added to Auvik.
See How to enable SNMP on Watchguard firewalls.
For a WatchGuard HA pair:
- Confirm SNMP is enabled on the applicable WatchGuard devices.
- Confirm the Auvik collector can reach the management IP addresses.
- Confirm both members are discovered and authorized for SNMP where individual member monitoring is required.
- Check whether Auvik displays an HA widget or HA-specific device conditions for the pair.
- Confirm that the WatchGuard firmware exposes the HA information required by Auvik.
Auvik’s current Knowledge Base does not confirm that WatchGuard HA status is natively polled or that WatchGuard HA alert definitions are enabled by default. Do not assume that an HA alert will be available solely because SNMP is working.
If Auvik does not expose WatchGuard HA status or an HA alert condition, consult WatchGuard documentation and contact Auvik Support to confirm whether the specific device model and firmware are supported.
Custom OID monitoring
If a firewall is not natively supported, HA information may be available through custom OID polling.
However, custom OID alerting is not currently available in Alerts v2 according to the current Auvik HA alerting documentation. Custom OID polling may therefore provide visibility into the value without providing a direct Alerts v2 trigger for that value.
HA monitoring limitations
- Auvik cannot parse or interpret vendor-specific HA logs.
- Passive members may not respond directly to ICMP or SNMP.
- Native support may retain a passive device in inventory without providing full independent polling.
- HA monitoring behavior can vary by vendor, model, and firmware.
- A failover or synchronization alert may not be available if the required HA data is not exposed to Auvik.
- An HA failover test can affect production traffic and should be performed only during an approved maintenance window.
Troubleshooting missing HA information
If HA status is not displayed:
- Confirm that SNMP credentials are valid.
- Confirm that SNMP access rules allow the Auvik collector to poll the device.
- Confirm that the device is discovered and authorized.
- Confirm that both HA members have the required management connectivity.
- Review the device model and firmware documentation for HA information over SNMP.
- Check whether the HA widget or HA alert conditions are available in Auvik.
- Contact Auvik Support with the device model, firmware version, HA mode, SNMP version, and screenshots of the available device details.
