How to set Alert Delays on Clears with Alerts v2

Follow

Alerts that clear immediately can create unnecessary noise when a condition briefly flaps or momentarily returns to normal before the underlying issue is truly resolved. This often results in rapid alert/clear notifications that add distraction rather than clarity.

Alerts v2 allows you to apply alert delays on clear conditions to control when an alert is cleared and a clear notification is sent. In addition to defining the clear condition itself, you can use the Alert Delay setting to introduce timing or frequency requirements that must be met before an alert is cleared.

This helps ensure alerts only clear when a condition is stably resolved, reducing alert noise and improving confidence in alert state changes.

No Delay

The No Delay option clears an alert as soon as the clear condition is met and immediately sends a clear notification.

This behavior may be appropriate for conditions that are highly stable. However, in environments where devices or metrics can briefly fluctuate, using no delay may result in alerts repeatedly triggering and clearing in quick succession (alert flapping).

To reduce this noise, consider using time delay described below.

Time Delay

The Time Delay setting defines how long Auvik waits after the clear condition is met before clearing the alert and sending a clear notification.

How it works:

  • When the clear condition is met, Auvik starts a timer.
  • If the clear condition stops being true before the timer expires, the alert remains active, no clear notification is sent, and the timer resets.
  • If the clear condition remains true for the entire duration of the time delay, the alert is cleared and the clear notification is sent.

Use Time Delay when you want to ensure a condition remains healthy for a continuous period before considering the issue resolved.
