How to Alert on High Disk Partition Utilization on Servers

Follow

Auvik Server Monitoring lets you track system health across Windows servers by setting up alerts based on key performance metrics, such as disk partition usage. This article walks you through creating a custom alert to notify you when disk space usage exceeds a specific threshold on any partition.

Prerequisites

- Server Monitoring must be enabled.
- The endpoint agent must be installed on the Windows Server.
- The Auvik collector must be able to discover the Windows Server.
- You must have the necessary permissions to create or modify alerts in Auvik.

Steps to Create the Alert

1. Navigate to Manage Alerts > New Alerts.
2. Click Add Alert.
3. Fill in the Alert Name.
4. Fill in the Alert Description.
5. Set the Apply Conditions dropdown to Disk partitions on a device.
6. Choose devices to apply the alert to:

Option 1: Use or create a tag (recommended if you will create more than one server alert):
  - Select Devices with this tag.
  - Click Create New Tag.
  - Provide a Tag name.
  - Add a rule where Device Model contains Windows Server.

Option 2: Manually set the devices:
  - Select Devices that match these conditions.
  - Add a rule where Device Model contains Windows Server.

7. Set the Alert Severity.
8. Define the Trigger Conditions:
  - Add a rule where Disk Partition Used (%) is greater than the desired threshold.
  - If an absolute threshold is preferred, use Disk Partition Used (GB) instead.
  - To target a specific partition, add a rule where Disk Partition Name is equal to the desired partition.

9. Enter a Trigger message:
  - Type $ to see the list of available variables.

10. Set the Alert delay:
   - Use this to avoid alerting on services that recover on their own.

11. Add Notifications:
   - If using email notifications, set the Email delivery delay.

12. Define the Clear Conditions:
   - Select Custom Clear Condition.
   - Add a rule where Disk Partition Used (%) is less than the threshold, with a buffer to avoid frequent toggling between alert and clear states.
   - If a specific partition was used in the trigger condition, also add a rule where Disk Partition Name is equal to that partition.

13. Define the Clear message.
14. Click Complete and Save.
