Installing the Auvik Endpoint Agent

Follow

Our endpoint agent software supports Windows 10 and onwards, as well as macOS 12 Monterey and onwards.

The software is delivered in a multi-stage fashion: an initial lightweight PKG or MSI installation package registers a background service with either the Windows or macOS operating system. A separate stage then begins which securely downloads and installs feature-specific modules to be registered and run separately from the original lightweight installer.

There are only minor differences in installation footprint between Windows and macOS, specifically for the remote support feature set as each operating system requires uneven complexity when performing screen detection and capture.

After successful installation, program files will be located under the following folders/directories:

Windows

C:\Program Files\Auvik\

macOS

/Library/Auvik/

/Library/LaunchDaemons

For Windows, there are no registry keys modified as part of installation during this release. Future releases may leverage this feature to facilitate configuration or secret key storage.

Installation

In order to view Endpoint Monitoring data in Auvik, the Auvik Agent first needs to be installed on each endpoint and registered with an Auvik Site. After installing the Agent, endpoints will be located under the Auvik Site they are registered to. If all of your endpoints are on-site, then simply register each endpoint to its Home Site. If there are remote endpoints that you want to monitor, we recommend creating a new Auvik Site just for your remote endpoints, or choosing an existing Site to be the Home Site for remote endpoints. Once you’ve decided which Auvik Site you’d like to register your endpoints to, follow the steps below to begin the installation process.

Note: The Agent installation process requires the Super Admin role.

1. Generate a Site Registration Key

The Site Registration Key (SRK) is used for Agent registration and authentication with your Auvik Site. The administrator needs to manually generate an SRK for each Site when enabling Endpoint Monitoring for the first time. Generating this key is required before the installer can be downloaded in the next step.

  • Navigate to the Auvik Site you want to register your endpoints with
  • Go to the Settings page, then go to the Site Registration Key tab:
  • Click the Regenerate button
  • Click Yes when prompted to generate a new SRK

2. Download the Agent

Now that you have generated an SRK for this Auvik Site:

  • Go to the Agents page, located under the Admin section
  • On the Agents page, click the Deploy Agent button in the top right corner of the Agents table:
  • This will bring up the Deploy Agent screen
  • From here, download the appropriate installer for the target OS
    • If you plan to install the agent using a script, copy the command provided on the Deploy Agent screen - you’ll need it later

3. Install the Agent

Installing Using an RMM Tool

  • Configure your RMM to upload the PKG or MSI file to the endpoints
  • Have your RMM execute the installation command (provided in the Auvik app) to run the installer remotely
    • You may need to modify this command according to your specific environment

Installing Manually

Transfer the PKG or MSI file to the endpoint device. Use either of the following options to run the installer:

  • Double-click the installer file
  • Follow the installation wizard
  • Open a command prompt (as Administrator) or a terminal window
  • Navigate to the folder/directory where you placed the installer
  • Execute the installation command that was provided in the Auvik app
