MetaGeek Tonic supports packet capture in Windows with standard, off-the-shelf Wi-Fi adapters.
When using supported adapters for packet capture, providing a driver is not necessary. When the MetaGeek application launches and enters packet capture mode, a custom driver is swapped in by the MetaGeek application to enable packet capture. When the user session ends, the original driver is swapped back in (if available).
Mix and Match
While mixing adapters isn't considered best practice due to variations in adapter capabilities and sensitivity, MetaGeek software allows the mixing and matching of Wi-Fi adapters. This can be useful if you are trialing or evaluating MetaGeek products, and have a drawer full of adapters to choose from (we know a Wi-Fi engineer when we see one).
For production use, we recommend matching adapter models, primarily to ensure somewhat equal performance between adapters.
Note: When mixing adapters, you may need to restart the MetaGeek application when a new adapter model is added.
Supported Adapter List
Note: 802.11ax packet capture adapters are not currently available, but we will continue to look for an 802.11ax packet capture solution.
